Preheat the air fryer to 175°C for 2–3 minutes.

Butter both sides of each bread slice using the unsalted butter or cooking spray.

Gently press down the center of each slice using a measuring cup or spoon to create a shallow well.

Crack one egg into the center of each prepared bread slice.

Sprinkle salt and freshly ground black pepper over the eggs.

Place bread slices in the preheated air fryer basket, optionally lined with parchment paper. Air fry for 4–7 minutes based on desired yolk doneness.

Add shredded cheese over the eggs during the final 1–2 minutes of air frying, if using.

Carefully remove the toasts using a spatula and serve immediately.
