Flatten two caramels together into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. If needed, microwave them for 5 seconds to soften. Repeat with remaining caramels and set aside.

Combine chocolate chips and shortening in a bowl. Melt using a double boiler or microwave on half power, stirring frequently until smooth.

Stir crispy rice cereal into the melted chocolate mixture until fully combined.

Cover each caramel rectangle with the chocolate mixture. Use a fork to dip and coat, letting excess chocolate drip off by running the caramel across the lip of the bowl.

Place coated caramels on waxed paper. Allow to firm up for 1-2 hours before serving.
